The turn system

Post by ch00blet on Tue Jan 06, 2009 7:55 pm

I sincerely hope that many of you have noticed how the turn system in Citrine is completely different from the turn system in the actuall games.

Let me explain:

In the real game, both battlers choose what they want to do AT THE SAME TIME, and then the game decides who moves first in that turn, depending on various things.

For example, if one player decides to switch pokemon and the other players decides to attack, the player who decides to switch pokemon will do that first, and the pokemon they switch to will get hit.

If both players tell their pokemon to attack, then the pokemon which is fastest attacks first. However, there are things called "priority" attacks. These priorities decide which pokemon attacks first, reguardless of their speed.

So basically the things that decide what happens first goes like this:

First: whether or not one of the players decide to switch pokemon
Second: whether or not the moves being used have "priority"
Third: if neither players switches, and both pokemon use a move with the same priority, the speed of the pokemon decides which one attacks first.

I just explained the turn system of the real games. Now, in Citrine, the turn system is much more simple: both players take it in turns to do SOMETHING. No matter what it is, they just take it in turn. This can cause a few problems:

- If you just fainted one of your opponent's pokemon, your opponent is able to send out their next pokemon AND attack your pokemon, possibly fainting it, without giving you a chance to switch out. This gets really annoying in gym battles.

- Moves with priority, such as quick attack, are completely broken- they simply are not "quick".

- The speed of a pokemon is pretty much useless. I'm not sure if it determines which players goes first at the very start of the battle or not. If it does, then that is the ONLY thing it does.

- (There are more problems but I fail to recall them all- will edit when I remember)

For an explanation of move priority, this page contains everything you need to know: http://www.serebii.net/games/speedpriority.shtml

And that is basically all. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

Discussed a milion times, will be changed in the future, but since Ive had a heck of a time coding the current system don't expect it to happen anytime soon. It just brings up alot of "what if a player disconnects" issues. Not to mention the current system needs to be overhauled completely.

Appriciate the overview and explanation, ill make sure to look at it when I'm changing the system.

PS: I hate myself for making this game close to the original, if I made it like all the other lame Pokemon games on BYOND I would not have to listen to people claiming things should be changed Wink
Then again, the game wouldn't have been so much fun?

Firstly, I apologise for not checking to see if this had been mentioned before.

I am glad you found the overview and explanation useful.

I think you should be proud of yourself for making the game close to the original. Despite its faults, your game is by far the best pokemon game on BYOND. When I was looking for an online pokemon game i wanted something that was basically the same as the the original games, but online- and Citrine fits that description better than any other online pokemon game that i have found.

If you make a "pokemon" game that is different from the originals, it simply isn't pokemon and is therefore not much fun.

So yeah... nice game and i will play it a lot. The only problem is that it is offline SO often! I don't understand why you have to take it offline to fix things and make updates, because all the other online games i do don't have to do that, but oh well.

Anyway thanks for making this awesome game =]

You just answered your own question there, Citrine isn't like any other Online game. To be exact, I haven't seen any online game, even those that aren't Byond games, close as the originals than Citrine. I do understand Fint, He made the game too similar to the orignals, users now want it like the orignals.
While in other pokemon games, no one even care about the rules.
I could say Fint should be happy for making a great game, but he doesn't like the word Should, so I hope Fint is happy with the game.
All the hard work will pay off! king

Pretty much, by the way I can't stand most of the other Pokemon games on BYOND or even perhaps any of the games on BYOND, so I must say, bravo Fint for pushing BYOND to the limits, I still find that amazing, I wish BYOND would get a better upgrade though..
P.C.O is the only game I play BYOND related....

Besides isn't it better to get suggestions/comments then non at all?

I would think that even many comments about the same topic would be good. It would show what people consider to be the priority.

Like I said in my last post Shocked

Besides that, I really don't care that it isn't turn based, because first of all you can only do so much with the Byond program.

And the only thing that bugs me about not having it is Quick Attack, it makes me feel sad inside seeing such a good attack go to waste.

I'm not complaining though I think P.C.O is at it's prime and will most likely go higher.

It gets first priority when the opponent attacks, don't know about switching, I think switching is faster

So switching and using a item will always take place BEFORE the attacks?
If so it doesnt matter much if they both use an item or both switch, since it will not have any down sides for any.

Also, if a Pokemon faints. They trainer using the fainted Pokemon gets to pick the next pokemon, at that point does that guy he's fighting also get the option to switch? Or does he have to stick with the Pokemon he is using?

Switching and items always come before attacks yes.

And when a pokémon faints, both trainers get to switch.(of course it's optional for the trainer whos pokemon is stiill healthy)

Well the new battle system is ALMOST working
I for the priorities worked out, chenged alot of stuff.
Chould handle battles much more efficient now!

Really quite proud of it Razz
Hopefully I'll get it working before next week so we can test.
Think there might be some incompatibility problems, but we'll see.
I think I might even get some slowly-going-down-hp-bar action Razz

don't think you need to worry about the HP bar the game already beats other Byond Pokemon games with a bloody bat, especially Battle Force and that one other crappy game, don't try it, you'll end up burning your eyes out, thank goodness I know the key board without looking...
