Well, as for glitch -> lagg, I've checked my network and there is no trafic.
So just see if you got some downloads running perhaps.
lso, when people log in for the first time, they download the game trough the server, which makes it a bit slower now and then.

Well pointers:
Don't waist to many Pokeballs.
Talk to other people alot, have fun and enjoy.

Yes, making friends can have a major impact on your experience. As Fint said try to conserve your pokeballs the best you can. Use your money and items wisely, think about things before you buy them or use them especially. Be strategic with your move-set, try to hold different type attacks and status attacks so you can be prepared for anything. Try not to have straight type attacks (Unless you want to.) be sure to mix it up. Before trading make sure you are absolutely comfortable with the pokemon you are getting and the pokemon you are trading being gone.

Research!
And when you done doing that, research some more.
Google is your friend so use it.
The Pokemon are Gen 3 so go from there.
Research the attacks, type, levels, almost everything there is to know about Pokemon and you can become great!
Well that's what i think.

@Edie above^: These are Gen 1 pokemon, actually. lol

My Advice: When you trade for a pokemon, it may be a good idea later on to breed it for a baby (lvl 1) version. The pokemon that got traded to you will only obey you up to lvl 33, but the baby will obey to lvl 100.
